Stanford iTunes U class at 1 million downloads

A Stanford programming class on developing for the iPhone has recorded 1 million free downloads in just seven weeks of being offered on iTunes U, Apple’s free library of educational lectures and lessons.

IPhone Application Programming CS193P, a twice-a-week course that began April 1, is the fastest iTunes U class to hit the 1 million download milestone.

“I had a feeling this class would be popular but the level of popularity is surprising,” said Troy Brant, one of the graduate student instructors for the course.

The appeal of the class illustrates the allure the iPhone has had on not just consumers but legions of developers and budding coders. Brent Izutsu, manager of Stanford on iTunes U, said the university has offered about 100 courses on iTunes U but none has come close to the iPhone course.
