I read them to her everyday and they really cheer her up. Orlando, Michael, Monica and I went to the doctor with her yesterday. It appears that she has some options at this time which we may revisit at her next appointment in three weeks. Making a decision is really hard. If she goes off chemotherapy treatment she then becomes a hospice patient, if she stays on the chemotherapy treatment she will continue with her doctor visits, CT Scans etc. and the benefits of the treatment are unknown but the doctor seems to think it would be effective on keeping the cancer in check a bit longer.

The most important part right now is to keep her spirits up which is probably the best medicine of all. Elke is always excited to hear from you. Well, Elke has officially decided not to continue with the chemotherapy treatments. That means she is now a candidate for hospice. Hospice is when the doctor believes the patient has 6 months or less left. Or course that isn’t easy to determine so it could be less or it could be more. The hospice nurse came today to register her in the program and we were later visited by a social worker who will oversee all of her other needs. This was definitely a hard day for her but we are thankful for a service like hospice and all of the wonderful people who do this work. If you didn’t know it, Elke actually worked as a hospice nurse for a couple of years.

Since coming off chemotherapy she has had more energy and has felt better overall so she has taken a few trips to the studio to paint but she gets tired pretty easily. In fact the nurse from hospice was worried at first that Elke might not be sick enough to qualify for for the program. That’s also because she does a great job of appearing to be fine.

We are happy to announce that Elke’s wonderful friends at 4th Street Studio have decided to put on an art show in her honor. It will be on December 12 from 6-9pm. We hope to see many of you there. If you did not get an invitation from the studio let me know so I can have them add you to the invite list.

Thank you all for being so caring and supportive.
