El presidente electo Barack Obama le escribi\u00f3 una carta a sus hijas, Malia y Sasha a pocos d\u00edas de ser juramentado como el presidente cuadrag\u00e9simo cuarto de los EE.UU. En ella les dice el porqu\u00e9 decidi\u00f3 lanzarse para presidente del pa\u00eds. Les dice que busc\u00f3 la casa blanca para ofrecerles un mejor futuro a ellas y a todos los ni\u00f1os y ni\u00f1as del pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La carta fue publicada en l\u00ednea hoy por la revista Parade y este domingo ser\u00e1 publicada en la versi\u00f3n impresa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e9 que las dos se han divertido mucho estos \u00faltimos dos a\u00f1os durante la gira de campa\u00f1a, yendo a d\u00edas de campo, desfiles y ferias estatales, comiendo todo tipo de comida chatarra que seguramente ni su madre ni yo les permitir\u00edamos comer. Pero tambi\u00e9n s\u00e9 que no ha sido siempre f\u00e1cil para ustedes y su mam\u00e1, y que pese a lo entusiasmadas que est\u00e1n sobre su nuevo cachorro, no compensa todo el tiempo que hemos estado separados. Yo s\u00e9 cu\u00e1nto me he perdido en estos \u00faltimos dos a\u00f1os y hoy quiero decirles uno poco m\u00e1s de por qu\u00e9 decid\u00ed llevar a mi familia en esta traves\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuando yo era un hombre joven, pens\u00e9 que la vida se trataba fundamentalmente de m\u00ed, de c\u00f3mo yo me enfrentar\u00eda al mundo, ser\u00eda exitoso y lograr\u00eda las cosas que quer\u00eda. Pero despu\u00e9s ustedes dos llegaron a mi vida con toda su curiosidad y magia y esas sonrisas que siempre logran llenar mi coraz\u00f3n y alegrar mi d\u00eda. Y de repente, todos los grandes planes que ten\u00eda para m\u00ed ya no parec\u00edan tan importantes. Pronto descubr\u00ed que los grandes momentos de gozo en mi vida era el gozo que veo en ustedes. Y me di cuenta que mi propia vida no tendr\u00eda mucho valor a menos que fuera capaz de asegurar que ustedes tuvieran cada oportunidad de ser felices y sentirse plenas. Al final, ni\u00f1as, es ese el motivo por el que decid\u00ed buscar ser presidente, por lo que yo quiero para ustedes y para cada ni\u00f1o en este pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yo quiero que todos nuestros ni\u00f1os acudan a escuelas donde desarrollen su potencial, escuelas que sean un reto, los inspiren y que generen en ellos una capacidad de maravillarse del mundo que tienen a su alrededor. Quiero que tengan la oportunidad de ir a la universidad, a\u00fan si sus padres no son ricos. Y quiero que accedan a buenos trabajos, trabajos que paguen bien y les den beneficios como atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, trabajos que les dejen tiempo suficiente para estar con sus propios hijos y retirarse con dignidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiero que podamos sobrepasar las fronteras del descubrimiento para que puedan conocer nuevas tecnolog\u00edas e inventos que mejoren sus vidas y hagan de este planeta un lugar m\u00e1s limpio y seguro. Y yo quiero que podamos sobrepasar nuestras propias fronteras para que llegemos m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la divisi\u00f3n de raza y territorio, g\u00e9nero y religi\u00f3n que evita que veamos lo mejor de cada uno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A veces tenemos que mandar a nuestros j\u00f3venes, hombres y mujeres, a guerras y otras situaciones peligrosas para proteger nuestro pa\u00eds, pero cuando lo hacemos, quiero estar seguro que sea s\u00f3lo por muy buenas razones, que hagamos todo lo posible por arreglar nuestras diferencias con otros de manera pac\u00edfica, y que hagamos todo lo posible por mantener a todos nuestros compatriotas seguros. Y quiero que cada ni\u00f1o entienda que es una bendici\u00f3n tener a estos aguerridos americanos pelear porque no es de gratis, que con el gran privilegio de ser un ciudadano de este pa\u00eds vienen grandes responsabilidades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esa fue la lecci\u00f3n que su abuela intent\u00f3 ense\u00f1arme cuando yo ten\u00eda su edad, ley\u00e9ndome textos de la Declaraci\u00f3n de Independencia y explic\u00e1ndome sobre los hombres y mujeres que marchaban por la igualdad, porque cre\u00edan que esas palabras que se hab\u00edan escrito en papel hace dos siglos significaban algo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ella me ayud\u00f3 a entender que Am\u00e9rica es grande, no s\u00f3lo porque es perfecta, sino porque siempre puede ser mejor, y que el trabajo no acabado para perfeccionar nuestra uni\u00f3n recae en cada uno de nosotros. Es una carga que nosotros pasamos a nuestros hijos, y a la que nos acercamos con cada generaci\u00f3n, cada vez m\u00e1s cerca de lo que sabemos Am\u00e9rica debe ser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Espero que ambas retomen esa responsabilidad, corrigiendo los errores que vean y trabajando para dar a otros las oportunidades que ustedes han tenido. No s\u00f3lo porque tienen una obligaci\u00f3n de dar algo de regreso al pa\u00eds que le ha dado tanto a su familia, sino porque tienen esa obligaci\u00f3n con ustedes mismas. Porque es s\u00f3lo hasta que ustedes empujan su esfuerzo hacia algo m\u00e1s grande que ustedes mismas que ver\u00e1n su verdadero potencial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estas son las cosas que quiero para ustedes, crecer en un mundo que no ponga l\u00edmite a sus sue\u00f1os ni metas fuera de su alcance, y que crezcan como mujeres compasivas y comprometidas que ayudar\u00e1n a construir el mundo. Y quiero que cada ni\u00f1o tenga las mismas oportunidades de aprender y so\u00f1ar y crecer que ustedes, ni\u00f1as, han tenido. Por eso he decidido emprender esta aventura con mi familia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear Malia and Sasha,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know that you’ve both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn’t have let you have. But I also know that it hasn’t always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn’t make up for all the time we’ve been apart. I know how much I’ve missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me-about how I’d make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn’t seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn’t count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that’s why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential-schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college-even if their parents aren’t rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you’ll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country-but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free-that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better-and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It’s a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you’ve had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much-although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the things I want for you-to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That’s why I’ve taken our family on this great adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
